Reset Moving Korean Culture Forward is a thought-provoking look at evolving values in South Korea---how they affect the nation's global success and the role they play in an individual's life and sense of happiness.

Sun Segura, a businesswoman born in Seoul, emigrated to the U.S. as a young adult. Visiting her homeland decades later, she was impressed to find a country very different from the one she left. Curious about the effect Korea's economic miracle had on everyday life, Segura wondered if the social ideas and practices she had come to appreciate in the United States could benefit South Korea. She spent several years researching some universal topics in contemporary South Korean culture. Through interviews with a diverse group of people---experts in business, innovation, and psychology; teachers; parents; artists and business owners---she explored the current state of race relations, gender disparity, communication, family dynamics, education, innovation and design.

Her findings span Korean culture and speak to us all regarding our own cultural values. In her in-depth interviews, personal experiences, and the multi-cultural lens through which she views her country, she offers a nuanced and pragmatic perspective of universal challenges and opportunities.

In Segura's view, South Korea should not only be a powerhouse in innovation and technology, but a leader in human rights and social progress, and a top tourist destination on a par with other small countries with big reputations. Koreans have proved they can change quickly when they are motivated. Individuals may not think that their actions affect the culture or the country, but change happens one person at a time. She reminds us that only a few decades ago, it was unimaginable that South Korea would dominate the global electronics and automotive industries and be on course to dominate other business niches. This book is an honest critique, written with enormous love and respect, aimed at motivating the rising generation to help Koreans reach thier full potential in an age-old culture with a limitless future.

Reset Moving Korean Culture Forward edition by Sun Segura Politics Social Sciences eBooks

Reset is a surprising, informative cross-cultural comparison of the U.S. and Korea. The author, Sun Segura, engages her readers by telling her personal and professional stories and those of others. She's selected a complete range of interesting and controversial issues to examine from Korean work culture to K-pop. Although she grew up in South Korea, Sun, a successful businesswoman, has lived and worked in the U.S. for several years. When she returned to Korea for visits, she's been amazed at her home country's transformation. Her insider/outsider view, her sense of humor, and her unflinching honesty makes this a must-read. I found out about Reset through Sun's speeches at Extreme Toastmasters in Chicago. I'm so glad I did because I have a better understanding of Korean culture and how Korea fits into the world picture now.

Reset Moving Korean Culture Forward edition by Sun Segura Politics Social Sciences eBooks Reviews

As a non-Korean with knowledge of the country and an interest in the culture, I took a lot away from this book.

Author Sun Segura wants to start a discussion with her fellow countrymen. Now that Korea has arrived on the world stage, she finds it high time for Korea to pause and deeply reflect on what type of society it wants to be. While remaining fair and measured, she takes a critical eye to issues as varied as work culture, the treatment of dogs, women’s equality, and even Korean design. By referencing news stories, radio programs, and other media, the author makes the case that Korea has a lot of room to learn and progress.

To be sure, this is not an academic book filled with hard-hitting analysis. That said, I found the most thought-provoking sections to stem from the informal interviews and discussions the author has had with friends, acquaintances, journalists, fellow designers, etc. It is a book of stories, engaging anecdotes, and personal insights. That’s where this book really shines.

I’m not a member of the audience the author is explicitly writing for. You might not be either. But that’s what made this book refreshing in comparison to other Western commentary on Korea, which rarely delves into the nuance of interpersonal relationships. I encourage anyone with an interest in Korean or Asian culture to read it for yourself and learn as much as I did.
Excellent read! Segura's many years in both Korea and America combined with her tremendous experience as a business leader in the culture and design world giver her a distinctive voice for this area. It's clear throughout the book that her heart is not to judge the culture, but to offer her unique perspective and revelations in a way that could affect change, or at the very least open dialogue and stir momentum.

She covers a broad and rich variety of topics, yet digs deeply for each, considering both sides and pulling in knowledge from other speakers and writers, as well as direct interviews. There is a wealth of gracefully provocative material here to challenge Koreans as they continue pressing forward into a globalizing world, as well as material that fleshes out Korean culture for westerners.

Segura also works to present the material in a way that the reader can truly digest it. She's done that both by dividing the work into many subsections, and by including 'reset perspective' call-outs that direct the reader to specific actionable issues and questions.

This book is excellent for Koreans wishing to expand their worldview and embrace some potentially pivotal questions, but it's also a great read for those interested in other cultures and how they grow and change. I enjoyed the well-crafted stories and insights, and even now continue to find myself thinking about and discussing some of the issues Segura raises here.
Reset Moving Korean Culture Forward, by Sun Segura, is a fascinating look at the South Korean mindset today. I highly recommend this book to my fellow Asians, as well as to non-Asians interested in learning more about Korea. I'm a US-born Filipino-American married to a Seoul-born Korean-American and am interested in learning about different Asian cultures, so this book really peaked my interest. Segura is a partner and managing director of an award-winning design firm and innovative digital type foundry, as well as a Korean-born American living in Chicago and Miami. Having moved to the US at 18, she hadn't been back to Korea in nearly 30 years until 2008 when she visited for work and saw how much Korea had evolved in amazingly positive ways. Unfortunately, she also noticed roadblocks to Korea's progress. This book is Segura's love letter to Korea. It shines a light on how remarkable Korea is and celebrates how far it has come, but it also shows areas that could use some improvement, or a "reset", in order to flourish and perform better on the global stage. She shares examples of other countries that have overcome similar obstacles to growth to inspire her fellow Koreans to consider changing or improving. She delves into a myriad of areas, including business, innovation, global leadership, tourism, design, humane treatment of animals, gender/racial equality, interpersonal dynamics, psychology and mental health. The wide breadth of topics that Segura researched is both impressive and interesting, especially when she weaves in personal anecdotes. I enjoyed her candid, conversational writing style and learning about how Korea's culture and perspective differs from other countries'. Although Segura states that she wrote this book for Koreans, I felt that there were many messages that could appeal to other Asians. In addition, there were several messages that spoke on a more universal human level. My favorite sections discussed equity, compassion, family dynamics and relationships, how we communicate with each other and connect, design, and copying versus innovation and originality. This book has many relevant and valuable messages to share, is an addicting read, and I'm still contemplating passages from the book long after I've put it down.
